Microsoft closes the Activision Blizzard acquisition.

Microsoft has officially completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, ending a regulatory process that stretched nearly two years after the deal was first announced in January 2022. The all-cash transaction, valued at $68.7 billion, makes Activision Blizzard a part of Microsoft Gaming, alongside Xbox Game Studios and ZeniMax Media.

The purchase adds major publishers and studios to Microsoft’s portfolio, including Activision, Blizzard Entertainment, and mobile giant King. It also brings blockbuster franchises such as Call of Duty, Diablo, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and Candy Crush under the same corporate roof.

The deal cleared its last major hurdle in the United Kingdom after Microsoft agreed to a restructured arrangement designed to address competition concerns in cloud gaming. As part of that restructuring, cloud streaming rights for Activision Blizzard games outside the European Economic Area were transferred to Ubisoft under an enforceable set of commitments accepted by the UK Competition and Markets Authority.

Xbox chief Phil Spencer marked the closing with a simple message: “Today is a good day to play.”

Key details

  • Deal value: $68.7 billion (all-cash).
  • Announced: January 18, 2022.
  • Closed: October 13, 2023.

Why it matters

The acquisition is one of the biggest deals in technology and the largest in video game industry history. It significantly expands Microsoft’s reach across console, PC, cloud, and mobile games, with King strengthening Microsoft’s position in mobile publishing.

It also deepens Microsoft’s first-party content pipeline, which could eventually feed into services such as Xbox Game Pass and support Microsoft’s long-term strategy around cross-platform and cloud-enabled play.

What happens next

  • Integration: Activision Blizzard joins Microsoft Gaming. Microsoft has said it will share more details on how the teams and franchises will be integrated over time.
  • Leadership transition: Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick was expected to remain through the end of 2023 to help with the transition.
