Legal and Policy Changes

Sony drops PSN account requirement for select PC versions of PlayStation games.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a policy change for a handful of its PC ports. An account for PlayStation Network, also known as PSN, will become optional for four single player titles on PC. The shift begins with the PC release of Marvel’s Spider Man 2 on January 30, 2025.

Sony says the goal is to add more benefits for players who choose to link a PSN account, instead of making account sign in mandatory. Those benefits include PlayStation overlay features such as trophies and friend management, along with title specific in game unlocks.

Games covered by the change

  • Marvel’s Spider Man 2 for PC (releasing January 30, 2025)
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered (coming April 3, 2025)
  • God of War Ragnarök
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

In game rewards for signing in with a PSN account

  • Marvel’s Spider Man 2: early unlock suits, the Spider Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit.
  • God of War Ragnarök: the Armor of the Black Bear set at the first Lost Items chest in the Realm Between Realms, plus a resource bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP).
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered: +50 points to activate bonus features and unlock extras, plus Jordan’s Jacket from Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as an Ellie skin.
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Nora Valiant outfit.

What PC players should know

For these titles, you can play without signing in to a PSN account. If you do sign in, you can access the added rewards and PSN connected features. Sony has indicated PlayStation Studios teams plan to add more sign in benefits over time, so rewards may expand with future updates.

The announcement follows broader debate in 2024 about account linking on PC releases. Sony’s latest approach focuses on optional sign in paired with incentives, rather than a blanket requirement.
